Texas LTC Range Proficiency

Of a possible score of 250 points, 175 (70%) is required to pass. A total of 50 rounds is fired during range qualifications.

The student will be given a maximum of three attempts to pass the shooting proficiency test in any given 24- hour period. Otherwise, a student must return another day to try again.

The B-27 target shown below will be used in any of the approved 4 colors (black, blue, red, green).

You are to use a handgun of any caliber. The state no longer has Semi-Auto and/or Non-Semi-Auto Classifications, so Semi-Auto or Revolver are classified similarly.

  • Laser sights (optical enhancers) are NOT permitted for qualifications.
  • Pregnant or nursing ladies should refrain from all shooting activities.

The Texas LTC course of fire is as follows:

3 yards, 20 rounds

  • 1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
  • 2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
  • 5 shots in 10 seconds, 1 time

7 yards, 20 rounds

  • 5 shots in 10 seconds, 1 time
  • 2 shots in 4 seconds, 1 time
  • 3 shots in 6 seconds, 1 time
  • 1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
  • 5 shots in 15 seconds, 1 time

15 yards, 10 rounds

  • 2 shots in 6 seconds, 1 time
  • 3 shots in 9 seconds, 1 time
  • 5 shots in 15 seconds, 1 time

How Shots Are Scored:

  • Hits within the 8 ring (red) are 5 points.
  • Hits within the 7 ring (yellow) and outside the 8 ring (red) are 4 points.
  • Hits outside the 7 ring and still on the silhouette are 3 points.
  • Hits in the white area are 0 points.

Specifics to scoring:

  • If a hit “cuts” the line it is considered to be the next highest point range.
  • If a hit cuts the silhouette it is considered to be 3 points.
  • If multiple hits are obviously in the same area and in a scorable point range, it is assumed that all 50 rounds have been accounted for and unaccounted rounds are assessed at 5 points each.
